Baby
Elephant The reasoning behind Baby Elephant's name is a closely guarded
secret. But band members Rubinski, DJ Jim Knickers and Chi-z-pimp reassured
Celebritymate's Toby Osborne that it has absolutely nothing to do with the
shape of male genitalia. Baby Elephant, it is immediately clear, don't want
to be conventional or pigeon-holed or labelled. "We're all about making new
music and trying things that haven't been done before; not falling into the
trap of being too 'samey.' Just evolving all the time - being more original."
The uncategorisability of the group only encourages journalists and reviewers
to delve deeper for a category that their music neatly slips into.
Nevertheless, I get the feeling that they won't slip into a category without a
struggle.
"We
play hip hop and drum and bass, depending on the crowd and venue. You know,
dance floor music." The band members are a "melting pot" of different
influences and they all listen to many types of music; Rubinski likes soul and
hip hop whereas as James is more into dance, for example. In a clever attempt
to pigeon-hole I ask which section in a record shop would a BE album go -
"Every section." Drat and double drat.
As a Welsh band, they deny that their nationality guarantees the attention
of the music industry. "Baby Elephant has been playing in London and Bristol,
but I think that phase has passed where everyone goes 'wooo another Welsh band
- cool!'" The secrecy behind the band's name finally gets the better of me.
I hazard a guess that it has something to do with men's doodahs. "NO - you'll
never get it." Come on just a small hint to whet my reader's appetites. "Okay,
one of our mums knows the truth." The plot thickens. So what are BE up to at the moment. "Mostly working
on our profile. Doing interviews. We have lots of underground releases coming
out all of the time. Of course, Chi-z and James are in their final year of Uni
which is keeping them really busy." Compared with these other interviews,
how am I doing - out of ten? "Preparation - Two; errr... buying us drinks -
Zero..." And how are they doing? Band offering the interviewer free tickets to
their next gig - Zero... Toby
Osborne. |
