Fly like an Eagle
Eddie Edwards is truly
remarkable. Despite attracting the attention of the world's media by performing
dismally as Britain's first (and only) Olympic ski jumper, he has become a
sports hero and unlikely superstar all over the globe.
However, he is turning his
back on the slopes to pursue a degree in Law. Although, a comeback is not out
of the question. "I would if I could, but sponsorship is proving difficult to
come by." With only 12 months left till the 2002 Winter Olympics, Eddie admits
time is running out.

In 1995,
Edwards came out of retirement for another bash at Gold. He became a celebrity
and regular on the TV chat show circuit, while training in New York at Lake
Placid. Nevertheless, ironically, 'The Eagle' failed to qualify in the 1998
games, not because he wasn't any good but, because his heat was cancelled due
to no snow. |
Since then Eddie has been
playing in goal for a showbiz footie league with "Ex-Eastenders and Ex-Corrie
stars" and working as a guest speaker. "I have done lots of big ski jumps -
risking life and limb - but being a guest speaker is truly very scary." Yet
some good has come out of his time in the States, he made a few friends in
Hollywood. "I signed a contract with a producer in LA to make my life story
into a major film. Disney, Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Dreamworks are all
interested." But, who on earth could play the builder turned ski jump hopeful?
"Brad Pitt," suggests Eddie before deciding an unknown actor would probably be
best.

As for the 2002
Olympics, never say never. "If I get a sponsor, I would put my studies on hold.
It would be a dream come true." The Eagle may fly again. |
